The Secret to Using A Coffee Urn

If you are looking for a coffee pot that can make anywhere between 30 and 100 cups of coffee, then you need a coffee urn. The urn will not only make the coffee, but it is also designed to keep the coffee hot for a period of time.

Some of the best known brands of coffee urns are West Bend, Farberware, Delonghi and Villaware. In general, they almost all function in the same manner. First the urn is filled with water and then a large strainer-type filter basket is positioned on a pole inside. The pole is hollow and sits in a depression in the bottom of the pot and extends to the top of the urn. (Similar to the insides of a percolator.) The water is heated, and is either sucked up the pole and then falls into and through the coffee grounds in the basket or, the water in the urn boils up and over the filter and mixed together with the coffee held in a covered filter basket. The difference in the brewing types is in the brand of coffee urn that you use.

When you make the decision to purchase a coffee urn, there are a few basic things you should look for before deciding on a specific make or model of urn.

If you don't have the instructions, search for the urn's manufacturer online and look for the operating instructions. The same goes for information regarding the care and cleaning of the coffee urn because this is just as important as the brewing info. A poorly cleaned and maintained coffee pot will only result in bad tasting coffee.

Coffee urns are the most economical way to brew multiple cups of coffee for a large gathering of coffee drinkers. And while product specifications are important, as are the directions for brewing coffee in the urn, there is one secret to brewing a great tasting pot of coffee, cup after cup in an urn. The secret is to turn the urn off no more than 30 minutes before the coffee is to be served and then, serve all the coffee as soon as it is done percolating. If you do not serve the coffee right away, the water in the urn will continue to boil the water, causing the coffee to taste sour, bitter, and burnt! Surely not the kind of coffee you really want to serve your guests.
